sister, Mimi, at Christmas in Denver.
About Randolph D. Amiscaray, aka Randy
I was born in the Philippines the same year that Ferdinand Marcos
declared marshal law. I am the first born of my family and of my
generation. My mother is Bicolano and my father is Ilocano. During the
first six years of my life, I began to speak Tagalog, Pangasinan, and
Ilocano. My father moved my family to Colorado during the mid-seventies and,
since I spoke no English at the time, I only have visual images of outside
interactions for the first few years of my life in the United States.
I grew up in Colorado, first in Cripple Creek, where my little white dog,
J.J., was run over by a truck in knee-high snow. I still remember the
yellow of the aspen and crisp white snow that graced the mountains in the
fall and winter and the crisp scent of pine trees in the rarefied air. My
brother, J.R., was born while we were there. Then we moved to Denver, where
I spent most of my childhood. I had a happy childhood and spent my days
wandering about the fields and streams near my parents' house. I learned to
catch crawdads and snakes and how to repair bikes. I wandered near and far.
I went to High School in the International
Baccalaureate program at George Washington High School and continued on to
college, first at the Colorado College, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, then
to the University of Colorado at Boulder. I continued to cultivate my
love of nature, the out-of-doors and living things. I then started
into the Ph.D. program at the University of Hawaii, Manoa Campus. I
never finished my degree there, but I did find a great life in Hawaii, where
I live today.
Photography
Photography for me has been a passion since I was introduced to it back
in the mid-eighties. I continued to photograph all through my high school
and college careers, having first had pieces on show at the
Camera Obscura Gallery in
Denver and in the Fine Arts Building at the University of Colorado.
Colorado
During my life in Colorado, I focused primarily on the production of
Black and White archival photography and was heavily influenced by the work
of Group f64, which included the likes of Ansel Adams. I believe in the use
of the Zone System in the visualization and final production of fine quality
black and white archival prints. The quality of the landscapes and light
that you find at altitude are unbelievable visual treats.
Hawaii
The move to Hawaii was a difficult one. The quality of light here is so
different from that of Colorado. The diffusive nature and high haze of the
sub-tropical atmosphere require a shift in perspective.
Thoughts
I believe in imagery that reflects the reality of our experiences. I
shoot full frame photos with a final image in mind and generally shun the
use of cropping during the production of prints. I would rather re-shoot
than crop images.
I hope that your visit to my site interests you in the art of
photography. Visit my
